Do What You Want Weekends

Do What You Want Weekends After years in the Midwest and a stint on the East coast, I finally headed west to fulfill a life-long dream of living in California. It has been everything I could have imagined and more. From the majestic views of Yosemite to the hikes I can do in the Redwood park in my town, there is an abundance of fun, mostly free activities waiting to be tackled. I started this blog as a way to show others that it's easy to do great weekend activities that don't break the bank or require a lot of planning. We often wake up on a Saturday and decide what we'll do that weekend - and it takes minimal effort. Like a good number of people, I sit behind a desk all week and just want to get out in the sun and play on the weekends. I hope that someone out there finds this information helpful and motivating to try something new and explore the beautiful things around us.

A Short Trip on the Pacific Crest Trail

A Short Trip on the Pacific Crest Trail

Along with the great hike along the Upper McCloud River as part of our Mt. Shasta yurt vacation, we also spent time in Castle Crags State Park.  Another gem in the state park system that also borders a large area of U.S. Forest Service land.&...

Waterfalls in the Clouds

Waterfalls in the Clouds

As part of our spectacular yurt vacation, we also had the chance to explore the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.  I still think Yosemite is the most magical place on earth, but the Mt. Shasta area is close on Yosemite's heels.  Mt. Shasta is p...

Living in the Round

Living in the Round

This weekend took us north to the Mt. Shasta area.  Not only was the mountain beckoning, but so was the luxury yurt we booked for the long Memorial Day weekend.  A traditional yurt is a portable, round structure used by Turkish or Mongolian n...

A Piece of Watsonville

A Piece of Watsonville

Some recent adventures have brought us down to Santa Cruz, Carmel and Monterey.  As the fun of the weekend comes to a close, we have found a little slice of heaven off Highway 1.  Tucked into fields of strawberries a few miles off 1 in Watson...

That park you always pass

That park you always pass

It only took me 3 years to finally stop at Olompali State Park.  It's right off of Highway 101 on the way up to Sonoma wine country and each time we've driven by, I wonder why we've never been!  While the park doesn't have an expansive trail ...

King and Queen of Castle Rock

King and Queen of Castle Rock

This weekend, we went in search of warmer weather in the South Bay.  While we weren't successful in this pursuit (the temperature in our car was 46 degrees when we arrived at the park), we were successful in finding one of the most fun hikes in th...

Rockin’ it in "The Traps"

Rockin’ it in "The Traps"

Inspired by this week's Sunday Drive in the SF Chronicle, we headed off for the Rocky Ridge trail at Las Trampas Regional Wilderness near San Ramon.  The two best things about this park: one, it's free and two, the views are unparalleled from any ...

Work it off before Wine Tasting

Work it off before Wine Tasting

One of my favorite things to do is to get in a challenging work out before we spend the afternoon wine tasting.  It requires quite a bit of water consumption to do it right, but there's nothing like enjoying wine country by bike. Our first ride of...

When Commerce Meets Concerts

When Commerce Meets Concerts

I've got Railroad Revival Tour fever.  I was one of the lucky 8,000 people who saw the first show of the tour this past week in Oakland.  The tour is a genius idea - 3 great bands, touring the west and southwest by rail car.  W...

Sweet Weekend at Sugarloaf

Sweet Weekend at Sugarloaf

There's nothing better than getting a 70 degree weekend the first camping trip of the season.  We headed back to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park for a 2-night trip and to finally summit Bald Mountain (see previous Sugarloaf post). The campground is rel...
